Hair disasters sometimes start when a client does not trust the stylist in front of them. Even though my post is funny it is true. Well not the unicorn part, but it might as well be. Once in awhile a new client will be in my chair for a consultation and have a list of requests that actually counteract what she thinks she wants. I also notice a huge mistake is when a client is weary of any stylist as she or he has had bad luck with a list of stylists. That client who has no trust and is cautious then wants to quote “drive the car”. I will listen to the client and pay close attention to certain words they use do figure out what they are truly after. I will then ask them to pick up any magazine and show me what they are talking about. Example of this happened last week. A woman came in and told me she wanted to be a red head and gave me all her lists of what she does and does not want. She asked for a swatch book to look at all the hair colors, I do not use a swatch book to show a client the little plastic color swatches as those are for the professional not the client to look at. I always ask the client to pick up a magazine in the salon and show me. Show me what you see as a red head. This new client picked up and showed me a really rich, dark, brunette. Yes there was warm tones in her color but I explained…that is not a red head. BOOM! right there she and I were on the same page. I simply stepped back and had to explain to her that from here on out…”I am driving the car” as she was in my chair looking for color correction.
